We’ve rounded up our top picks of how to spend a free day in one of Europe’s most magical islands.
This beautiful, idyllic place is home to a breath-taking beach of the same name. But that’s not all. You can visit the Corfu Donkey Sanctuary, or enjoy La Grotta or Paradise Beach. You can also explore the Corfu Aquarium! If relaxing is your thing then wander through and enjoy the restaurants, cafes and bars found within this area.
Take a boat cruise
Sailing is a fantastic way to take in the sights of this Greek island. With many cruises available, you are sure to find one that suits your budget and preferences. Some of the less-travelled areas on the north-east coast can only be accessed by boat. Very often, these areas are far quieter and less developed than the busier tourist areas.
Indulge in traditional Corfiot cuisine
Greek cuisine is always mouth-watering! But in Corfu, a number of delicious dishes are worth trying. One of the best dishes is Sofrito (sliced veal loaded with aromatic vinegar, garlic and parsley). Others include Bourdeto and Bianco, (fish stews) and Pastitsada (meaty pasta). Another favourite for the locals is grilled or baked octopus known as Bourdetto. Most dishes make use of fresh ingredients sourced locally. These ingredients include olives, lemons, vegetables, tomatoes and fish. As well as lamb, cheese, herbs, pasta and wine. The wine such as Retsina and Ouzo, along with locally brewed lagers are also excellent.
Head to the beach
There are many beaches that are perfect for sheer relaxation and bliss. Kassiopi, Barbati, Halikounas and the list goes on and on. Our advice is to do a bit of homework and make a list of the beaches that you most want to see. This will help you make the most of your time!
Scuba diving and snorkelling
Underneath the sea, you will find just as much to do as on land. With its unspoiled beauty and idyllic waters, both snorkeling and scuba diving are fantastic in Corfu. There are many dive schools and centres found in Corfu Town. You can join refresher courses as well as dive packages for experienced scuba divers. Snorkelling can be done in a number of spots.
Top Tip! Dive centres will have some tips on which spots are best for underwater exploring.
Discover Corfu Town by foot
Walking is a great way to take in the sights. Some top sights for your walkabout include the Old Fortress, the Esplanade and the New Fortress. Don’t forget about the Church of St Spyridon, Mon Repos and The Church of Saints Jason and Sosipater. In short, there will be something to behold around every corner.
