New York, New York! Welcome to the Big Apple! Today is your first day in New York City and it's yours to explore and start your planning your time here - you have two full free days to experience the city! Please note: Day 1-3 is unescorted with free time to explore New York City. You will meet up with your tour leader on the morning of Day 4.

DAY 2: New York City - Free day

You have the entire day to explore New York, one of the major commercial and financial centers in the world! Make time for main attractions like Times Square, Broadway and the Empire State Building! Hop on a bus to the 9/11 memorial, cross the Brooklyn Bridge and drinking a famous Starbucks coffee. There's also the breathtaking Statue of Liberty. Ferries depart from the New York harbour and from here you can see one of the most iconic skylines in all of America. Feel like taking the road less travelled? Walk around the Lower East side in Manhattan, or the more residential Upper West Side. Here attractions like Central Park and the Natural History Museum await! Remember to taste iconic New York dishes like New York Pizza, corn dogs or a bagel with cream cheese. Interesting fact: the cost of a single subway ride will be the same as a slice of pizza. It’s been nearly equal for 50 years! Please note: Day 1-3 is unescorted with free time to explore New York City. You will meet up with your tour leader on the morning of Day 4.

DAY 3: New York City - Free day

Day three in New York and still truckloads to see! Travel by movie locations if you wish, New York is one of the most famous filming locations in the world. Grand Central Terminal where movies like Superman, The Avengers and TV series like Gossip Girl were filmed. Want to go shopping? Head to Madison Avenue for luxurious designer shops or Union Square, one of the hottest shopping and eating areas. If you have time left, stroll just a few blocks north and make your way to Broadway to experience the musical mecca of America. New York is home to numerous theatres and claims to be the 'home of musicals'! New York truly never sleeps and the bars are open till the small hours of the morning! Your visit to the Big Apple will be a memorable one no matter how you spend it, you can bet on it! Please note: Day 1-3 is unescorted with free time to explore New York City. You will meet up with your tour leader on the morning of Day 4.

DAY 4: New York City, NY - Newport, RI - Boston, MA

We hope you enjoyed your New York vacation, because today we meet up with your Expat Explore tour leader and fellow travellers, wave the Big Apple goodbye and make our way to Boston. En route to the next leg of our Eastern US & Canada tour our first stop is in Newport in the state of Rhode Island. This oceanside town has a fascinating history. It started out as a vital port in the 1600s and became a haven for artists. Since then it has become a popular US holiday destination and is now home to the US Naval War College. After some free time for lunch we drive through the state of Connecticut towards Boston. Once we've checked in at our hotel, your Expat Explore tour leader will accompany you on a driving tour of Boston. You'll see a few famous landmarks, like Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market.

DAY 5: Boston, MA - Free day

Today you have a free day in Boston to explore the capital of Massachusetts. A good way to get around the city is by taking the hop-on hop-off bus tour, which is very convenient and visits major sights including Beacon Hill, Boston’s most historic and affluent neighborhoods and the 221-feet high Bunker Hill monument that commemorates the first major battle of the American Revolution.

DAY 6: Boston, MA - Flume Gorge, NH - Quebec City, QC

Cheers Boston! Today our USA tour crosses over into Canada, and on the way we visit Flume Gorge in New Hampshire. This natural gorge extends for 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty, and the sheer walls narrow to 12 feet apart in places. With a boardwalk taking you deep into the gorge, this is a priceless photo opportunity! After crossing into Canada we make straight for the country's only walled town - Quebec City. We make a quick stop at the hotel and then set out on foot to explore the city. Our walking tour takes us all over. You will see Old Quebec, an important UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other historical places of interest include Chateau Frontenac and the Quebec fortifications. After the tour, continue to explore by yourself before hopping on the coach and heading to the hotel.

DAY 7: Quebec City, QC - Free day

A Canadian tour isn’t complete without lots of opportunity for personal exploration. Today we're giving you an entire day to see Quebec at your own pace. There are plenty of outdoor activities and cultural destinations to discover. Feel like a bit of day trip? Speak to your Expat Explore tour leader about outings to the Montmorency Falls. Or just follow your nose and see where you end up!

DAY 8: Quebec City, QC - Montreal, QC - Ottawa, ON

That's it for Quebec! The next stop on our Canada holiday is Ottawa, the country's capital. Along the way, we'll make a stop in Old Montreal, with some free time for lunch. Now is a good time to try a local delicacy. We highly recommend some piping hot poutine - French fries topped with gravy and cheese curd (yum!). Arriving in Ottawa, we'll make a quick check-in at the hotel and then hop back on the coach to Parliament Hill for a walking tour.

DAY 9: Ottawa, ON - McDonalds Corners, ON - Toronto, ON

Today our Eastern US & Canada tour takes us to Toronto via McDonalds Corner. This is where we'll stop for an included breakfast, followed by a tasting and demo of one of the country's biggest exports - maple syrup. Did you know that Canada sends 9.4 million+ litres of this popular waffle topping into the world each year? When we've settled in at our Toronto hotel, your tour leader will take you on a city centre orientation tour. Get your bearings and set off on your own to explore this evening.

DAY 10: Toronto, ON - Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON - Niagara Falls, ON

You cannot call a Canada holiday complete without a Niagara Falls experience. Today we leave the shores of Great Lake Ontario to travel to these famous falls. Along the way, we'll break with free time for lunch at Niagara-on-the-Lake. This is a great time to sample some Canadian ice wine. Next up - the majestic Horseshoe Falls! Once we've booked into our Niagara Falls hotel, the evening is yours. You can join a boat tour to the falls, or experience them from the viewing points at the top. Stroll along Clifton Hill, visit a casino or go see the falls at night - it's up to you.

DAY 11: Niagara Falls, ON - Detroit, MI

Today our Canada & USA tour takes us back to the States. After waving Canada goodbye, we're off to Detroit. This tough, gritty city is known for American Motown music and muscle cars. Although Detroit was hit badly by the great recession, it didn't take the beating lying down. This is a city that has reinvented itself. Your Expat Explore tour leader will accompany you on a driving/walking tour when we arrive.

DAY 12: Detroit, MI - Cleveland, OH - Pittsburgh, PA

Next, our US holiday takes us to Pittsburgh via Cleveland. We stop over in the 'rock 'n roll capital of the world'. Time to try some American roadside cuisine! We recommend the Polish Boy. This famous sandwich is a delicious combination of bun, grilled kielbasa sausage, chips & coleslaw. We then continue to Pittsburgh. Here we take a ride on the century-old Duquesne Incline that takes us all the way up Mt Washington. From the observation deck at the top you'll be able to see the city and it's three rivers.

DAY 13: Pittsburgh, PA - Washington, D.C.

The next stop on our Eastern US & Canada tour is America's proud capital city. We travel east to Washington DC and start our tour of the city immediately. First on the list is Arlington Cemetery and the resting place of the late JFK. After a stop at the hotel, we're off again. Enjoy a ride on the Expat Explore coach and see Washington's most famous landmarks. The tour includes sightings of famous landmarks like the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the White House and the Pentagon.

DAY 14: Washington, D.C. - Free day

Washington is a city like no other and today you have the full day to explore it. Check off a few items on your personal bucket list or chat with your Expat Explore tour leader. If you really feel like seeing it all, we recommend the Washington DC Explorer Pass. This all-inclusive ticket saves you a lot of money, and gives you access to the Big Bus Hop-on Hop-off tour. This includes famous landmarks and destinations like the National Geographic Museum and Madame Tassauds DC. It also gives you access to bike, kayak and SUP rental.

DAY 15: Washington, D.C. - Philadelphia, PA - New York City, NY

Today is the final day of our Eastern US & Canada Tour. We wave DC goodbye and travel to New York via Philadelphia. Enjoy some free time to grab some tasty street food and make your way to explore the Liberty Bell Centre or Independence Hall on foot. Back on the coach, it's off to the Big Apple. Our tour concludes once we arrive in New York City. Hope you had an amazing experience and made memories to last you a lifetime.

Helpful Pre-Trip Info

Most nationalities will require pre-arranged visas or Electronic System for Travel Authorization's (ESTA's) for the USA and Canada for this tour. Please see our visas page for more information. It is your responsibility to contact the relevant embassy to confirm your visa requirements. Where a visa is required Expat Explore can provide support documentation upon request - please contact us for more information.

On tour costs

Please refer to the tour itinerary for full details of the activities and meals that are included in the tour cost, and those which are optional/extra. We would recommend budgeting $50-75 per day (this excludes optional excursions, see the essential tour information page for details and prices).

Room Sharing

Please note, by default all rooms are twin bed rooms.

  • Partners: When you book for more than one person, we will by default group you together in a room (unless you specifically request us not to). If you are unequal numbers (3, 5, 7 etc.) and we are unable to secure a triple room then the remaining traveler will be roomed with another passenger of the same gender.
  • Single Travelers: If you are travelling alone there is no compulsory charge - you will share a twin room with another passenger of the same gender. There is an optional single supplement/private room upgrade available for single travellers who wish to have a private room. This can be added at the time of booking or by contacting our customer services team. Please note that the room provided may be a single room with a single bed.
  • Triple Room requests: We can generally provide a triple room on request; however it is not guaranteed to be available in every destination. Please contact our customer services team to request a triple room. Please note that in some hotels, the triple may be a double and a single bed, or the third bed may be a pull-out or bunk-bed. Where we cannot provide a triple room the rooming will consist of one twin room and the third passenger sharing with another single traveller of the same gender.

In some destinations you will have a full free day, where you can choose to join our optional excursions or explore on your own.

Meeting Point

Your tour starts and finishes in New York City. Please have a look at our essential tour information page for detailed information.

This should be valid for at least six months after you have returned home from your trip. You should also have at least two blank pages as visas and entry/exit stamps can take up a whole page.

Have a question?

Are children allowed on your tours?

Our tours are not suitable for children under the age of 10 years old. However, at the discretion of Expat Explore we may consider younger children on certain tours if they meet certain criteria and a request is received in writing via email for consideration. Expat Explore reserves the absolute right to accept or decline a booking at our discretion.

Are flights included?

No, you will need to make your own arrangements to get to the meeting destination for the first day of your tour. Make sure you keep departure times and possible delays in mind when booking flights. We recommend Skyscanner for comparing prices from the vast majority of airlines.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements?

Before the tour starts, you will receive an email from us requesting your dietary requirements. There is always a vegetarian option, which is a meal without meat. We try as much as we can to offer you the traditional local cuisine.

Can you provide a triple room?

We can generally provide a triple room on request; however it is not guaranteed to be available in every destination. Please contact our customer services team to request a triple room. Please note that in some hotels, the triple room may consist of a double bed and a single bed, or a double bed and a pull-out or bunk-bed. Where we cannot provide a triple room the rooming will consist of one twin room and the third passenger sharing with another single traveller of the same gender.

Can you send me a quote?

The price shown on the website for your departure date on the day you book is the price you will pay. If you would like to make a group booking for 10 or more people please contact us.

Do I need a visa?

Please see our visas page and the pre-departure planning section for more information.

Do I need to change money before the tour?

Please make sure you bring with you for the start of the tour the local currency(ies) you will need for at least the first three days, as there may not be an opportunity to change currency at the very beginning of the tour. You should budget for any optional excursions you wish to do in this period (see 'Optional Excursions' tab above, these are paid in cash on tour unless stated otherwise) and non-included meals. We don’t recommend carrying large amounts of cash with you on tour; you are better off withdrawing enough cash to last you for the next 5-7 days, rather than carrying enough cash to last you for the entirety of the tour. Please refer to your pre-departure information for more information on the currencies you will require for your particular itinerary. When changing money please ensure that you are not given high denomination notes (for example €200 and €500 notes), as you will find most shops and restaurants will refuse to accept them, and your Expat Explore tour leader cannot accept them as payment for optional excursions.

Do you have on-tour luggage storage facilities?

No, we do not have these facilities. For security reasons you will be required to keep your belongings with you at all times. Please bear this in mind when you are deciding what to bring.

How can I get the documents I need to apply for my visa?

Expat Explore can provide travellers requiring visas with visa support documents on a request basis. Please note that you are required to pay for your tour in full in order to receive the documents. This is an embassy/consulate requirement by law. Once you have received confirmation that your booking has been paid in full, you can request your visa support documents by emailing info@expatexplore.com - please allow up to 10 working days to receive these documents.

How do I book/pay?

You can book online through our website or call our customer service team to make a booking over the phone. You must pay a deposit of the greater of 10% or 50 GBP (or equivalent if booking in a currency other than GBP) via our online payment platform to secure your place. You can pay the remaining amount up to 60 days before departure, with a debit/credit card or with a bank transfer.

How many other people will be on the tour?

It depends on how many other people book! There could be up to 51 other passengers, so you will have the opportunity to make lots of friends!

How much luggage can I bring?

Due to weight and space limitations, you are allowed to bring one main piece of luggage weighing no more than 20kg, and one small soft bag for hand luggage. On all tours, you will have to carry your own luggage (e.g. into hotels and up to your room if hotels don’t have elevators). Please bear this in mind when you are deciding what to pack.

Is my deposit refundable?

Your deposit payment secures your place(s) on the tour and the price you pay. Your deposit paid at the time of booking is non-refundable. Our full Terms and Conditions can be viewed online.

Is travel insurance compulsory?

Yes, and you are responsible for arranging your own insurance. Passengers and their personal property travel with Expat Explore solely at their own risk. Please refer to our travel Terms & Conditions for more specific information. For a relatively small price, travel insurance provides you with the peace of mind so that you can enjoy your tour without any worries. To receive a quote from one of our preferred travel insurance partners, please click here

What about room sharing & single supplements?

If you are travelling alone there is no compulsory charge - you will share a twin room with another passenger of the same gender. There is an optional single supplement/private room upgrade available for single travellers who wish to have a private room. This can be added at the time of booking or by contacting our customer services team. Please note that the room provided may be a single room with a single bed.

What is included in the tour price

The tour price includes accommodation for the duration of the tour; transport by private coach; breakfasts, lunches and dinners as per your itinerary and guided walking tours and excursions as per your itinerary. On top of this, you will have your Expat Explore tour leader to assist you along the way with great tips and handy advice! Please refer to the ‘Included’ section of the itinerary where a full breakdown is given.

What is the average age of your groups?

We have a very wide range of ages on our tours, and do not restrict our passengers to certain age groups or limits. A positive attitude and an open mind are more important than a number!

What level of fitness do I need to participate in these tours?

All travellers are required to carry their own bags, get on and off the coach and use public transport. Our city walking tours can last up to 3 hours and certain places involve walking up and down lots of steps. We want you to enjoy your tour, so read through the itinerary thoroughly and make your own conclusions as to whether you feel that you are fit and healthy enough.

What time does each day start on tour?

Generally, we like to make an early start, so that you can spend more time at each destination. On your free days, you can have a lie in if you wish!

Where does my tour depart from?

Please see the 'Tour Start & End Points' tab at the beginning of the Help Section for more information on the start and end points, and meeting times.

Who will be my tour leader?

Will I get confirmation of my payment?

As soon as your payment has been processed by our accounts team, we will send you a confirmation email. Please note this may take up to 5 working days, depending on your method of payment.
