Sweden is the largest of the Nordic countries, with a population of 9.5 million. Bordered by Norway and Finland, it is connected to Denmark by the bridge of Öresund. The northernmost part of the country is in the Arctic, while the south is mostly forest and farmland. Sweden is part of the European Union and Schengen Agreement so it is easy to visit if you require a visa, however its people opted not to join the Euro and to retain the Krona as the currency.

The history of Sweden of course goes back to the Vikings; the parks of the capital, Stockholm, are dotted with rune stones, and there are many burial mounds around the countryside. Later medieval towns and fortresses are also evident.

Stockholm is situated on 14 islands connected by 50 bridges, and the larger Stockholm archipelago has around 24,000 islands and islets. A very cosmopolitan city, Stockholm blends both classic and modern architecture. Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is dominated by the Royal Palace and Swedish Parliament. In contrast, the city centre is thoroughly new and exudes modern Scandinavian style, from the locals fashion to the shops and restaurants.

You can visit Stockholm on Expat Explore’s 18-day Northern Explorer, an incredibly popular itinerary that starts in Amsterdam and travels through Scandinavia, the Baltic states and central Europe. Check out the itinerary below come exploring with us!
