Have a question?

Are children allowed?

Our tours are not suitable for young children, so we set a minimum age limit of 10 years old. However, at the discretion of Expat Explore we may consider younger children on certain tours if they meet certain criteria and a request is received in writing via email for consideration. Expat Explore reserves the absolute right to accept or decline a booking at our discretion.

Are international flights included in the tour price?

No, you will need to make your own arrangements to get to the meeting destination for the first day of your tour. Make sure you keep departure times and possible delays in mind when booking flights. Please click here to visit Skyscanner - a useful tool for comparing prices from the vast majority of airlines.

Are transfers included in the tour price?

Your tour includes inbound and outbound airport transfers if your inbound flight arrives on the tour start date and your outbound flight departs on the tour finish date. Please email confirming your booking reference and the following information:
 • Your arrival date, time, airline, flight number and airport
 • Your departure date, time, airline, flight number and airport.

Can I access wi-fi on the tour?

Most hotels offer Wi-Fi, but there is usually a charge for access. Most cities and towns will have internet cafés where you can access the internet; opening hours will vary. Please speak to your tour leader and the reception staff at hotels for further information.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements?

Before the tour starts, you will receive an email from us requesting your dietary requirements. There is always a vegetarian option, which is a meal without meat. We try as much as we can to offer you the traditional local cuisine.

Can you provide a triple room?

We can generally provide a triple room on request; however it is not guaranteed to be available in every destination. Please contact our customer services team to request a triple room. Please note that in some hotels, the triple room may consist of a double bed and a single bed, or a double bed and a pull-out or bunk-bed. Where we cannot provide a triple room the rooming will consist of one twin room and the third passenger sharing with another single traveller of the same gender.

Can you send me a quote?

The price shown on the website for your departure date on the day you book is the price you will pay. If you would like to make a group booking for 10 or more people please contact us.

Do I need a visa to travel on this tour?

Please check with your local embassy to confirm if you require a visa to enter Egypt. Most nationalities can get their visa on arrival, others will have to apply for a visa in advance. Expat Explore can provide visa support documents if requested.

Do I need to change money before the tour?

Please make sure you bring with you for the start of the tour the local currency(ies) you will need for at least the first three days, as there may not be an opportunity to change currency at the very beginning of the tour. You should budget for any optional excursions you wish to do in this period (see 'Optional Excursions' tab above) and non-included meals. We don’t recommend carrying large amounts of cash with you on tour; you are better off withdrawing enough cash to last you for the next 5-7 days, rather than carrying enough cash to last you for the entirety of the tour. Please refer to your pre-departure information for more information on the currencies you will require for your particular itinerary.

Do you have storage/left luggage facilities?

No, we do not have these facilities. For security reasons, you will be required to keep your belongings with you at all times. Please bear this in mind when you are deciding what to bring.

How can I get the documents I need to apply for my visa?

Expat Explore can provide travellers requiring visas with visa support documents on a request basis. Please note that you are required to pay for your tour in full in order to receive the documents. This is an embassy/consulate requirement by law. Once you have received confirmation that your booking has been paid in full, you can request your visa support documents by emailing - please allow up to 10 working days to receive these documents.

How do I book/pay?

You can book online through our website or call our customer service team to make a booking over the phone. You must pay a deposit of 10% or 50 GBP (whichever is greater) via our online payment platform to secure your place. You can pay the remaining amount up to 35 days before departure, with a debit/credit card or with a bank transfer.

How many other people will be on the tour?

It depends on how many other people will book, but group sizes are generally between 15 and 25 people.

How much luggage can I bring?

Due to weight and space limitations, you are allowed to bring one main piece of luggage weighing no more than 20kg, and one small soft bag for hand luggage. On all tours, you will have to carry your own luggage (e.g. into hotels and up to your room if hotels don’t have elevators). Please bear this in mind when you are deciding what to pack.

How much spending money do I need for my holiday?

This is up to you, of course, and will vary depending on how much wish to spend on snacks, drinks, souvenirs etc. Entrance fees to ancient sites, museums and other attractions are not included in the tour price, and are payable in the local currency (Egyptian Pounds) to your tour leader. To help you budget, these prices are listed under the Experience tab for each day on the tour page.

How much walking is involved in your tours?

We believe the best way to get to the heart and soul of a city is on foot, surrounded by the people and the culture. For this reason, we do walking tours through most of the cities we visit. Many of the cities you visit are vast and old, often with steps and cobblestones. Our walking tours can last up to 3 hours with plenty of opportunities to take photographs and soak up the history of these fascinating places, but you do require a certain level of fitness to enjoy your tour to its fullest.

Is Egypt a safe place to travel to?

As a British travel company, we follow the advice of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. They currently advise that all the areas our tours go are currently safe to travel to. If this advice changes to the contrary, and we cannot adjust the itinerary to account, then we will cancel the tour and offer you a full refund. It is important you take out travel insurance as soon as you have booked your flights, and ensure that it covers you for the flights in the event of the tour being cancelled.

Is my deposit refundable?

Your deposit payment secures your place(s) on the tour and the price you pay. Your deposit paid at the time of booking is non-refundable. Our full Terms and Conditions can be viewed online.

Is travel insurance compulsory?

Yes, and you are responsible for arranging your own insurance. Passengers and their personal property travel with Expat Explore solely at their own risk. A suitable insurance policy should provide adequate cover for medical expenses arising through illness or accident prior to or during the holiday, and loss of holiday monies through cancellation or curtailment of the holiday or other insurable reasons. Clients should ensure that there are no exclusion clauses limiting protection for the type of activities in their tour. When on tour, ensure you keep personal belongings on you at all times and that your suitcase/backpack has a lock on it, especially in tourist areas. It may be advisable to wear a money belt to store money, credit cards and passport.
For a relatively small price, travel insurance provides you with the peace of mind so that you can enjoy your tour without any worries. To receive a quote from one of our preferred travel insurance partners, please visit WorldNomads (for all nationalities) or Hollard (for South Africans).

Should I tip the tour leader and driver, and if so, how much?

Whilst we fully understand that some nationalities are not accustomed to tipping, this is a normal part of culture in the places you will visit. Tipping has become an increasingly accepted practice in all areas of the service industry, but particularly in restaurants, bars and taxis worldwide. If you take a walking tour with a local guide, tipping these guides at the end of walking tours and excursions is always appreciated, but not expected. Your Expat Explore crew will be travelling with you between anywhere from just a few days, up to a few weeks, and you’ll soon become great friends. Expat Explore crew members will transform your trip experience from good to exceptional, and where this is the case a tip (even a modest one!) is always hugely appreciated. It is sometimes easy to forget that they work hard to ensure that you have your once in a lifetime experience. If you feel that your Expat Explore crew have done a good job, and you would like to tip them, this would be highly appreciated. We suggest approximately €2-€4 per day per person travelling for your crew. Tipping is entirely voluntary and the above rate is offered as a suggested guide only.

The tour I want is unavailable, what does this mean?

If a tour is displaying as fully booked, then unfortunately at this point in point, we do not have any available seats. However, we do occasionally receive cancellations, so if you cannot find an alternative tour or departure date, please contact our customer service team and they will add you to the waiting list for that departure.

What about room sharing & single supplements?

If you are travelling alone there is no compulsory charge - you will share a twin room with another passenger of the same gender. There is an optional single supplement/private room upgrade available for single travellers who wish to have a private room. This can be added at the time of booking or by contacting our customer services team. Please note that the room provided may be a single room with a single bed.

What happens if I forget or lose my passport?

Unfortunately, you will be unable to continue the tour and you should make contact with your closest embassy immediately to replace the passport. Your passport is an essential travel document, and should be kept safe at all times.

What happens if I miss the coach during the tour?

You will have to make your own way to the next destination at your own expense. Please ensure you are on time for all departures to avoid being left behind.

What happens if my visa gets rejected?

Please allow sufficient time to complete the visa process (at least 4 weeks). Should your visa application be unsuccessful, you will be able to change or cancel your tour, but standard terms and conditions (and therefore fees) will apply. Please refer to our terms and conditions for more information.

What is included in the tour price?

The tour price includes accommodation for the duration of the tour, transport by private coach, breakfasts and dinner as per your itinerary, ferry crossings (where applicable), and guided walking tours and excursions as per your itinerary. On top of this, you will have a tour leader to assist you along the way with great tips and handy advice! Please refer to the ‘Included’ section of the itinerary where a full breakdown is given.

What is the average age of your groups?

The average age of our travellers is approximately 30-35; however we most definitely welcome "older travellers" who are still young at heart! A positive attitude and an open mind are more important than a number.

What kind of accommodation do you use on your tours?

We have worked with our partners in Egypt to secure excellent accommodation. On Egypt tours, we use mostly 4-star hotels. During this tour, you will stay in twin share rooms, and, if you are a single traveller, you will be roomed with a fellow traveller of the same gender, unless you pay the single supplement.

What level of fitness do I need to participate in these tours?

All travellers are required to carry their own bags, get on and off the coach and use public transport. Our city walking tours can last up to 3 hours and certain places involve walking up and down lots of steps. We want you to enjoy your tour, so read through the itinerary thoroughly and make your own conclusions as to whether you feel that you are fit and healthy enough.

What time does each day start on tour?

Generally, we like to make an early start, so that you can spend more time at each destination. On your free days, you can have a lie in if you wish!

Where does my tour depart from?

Please see the 'Tour Start & End Points' tab at the beginning of the Help Section for more information on the start and end points, and meeting times.

Who will be my tour leader?

Our tour leaders come from all walks of life, with different backgrounds and interests. They are all confident and well-travelled, with an in-depth knowledge of the destinations they are working in, and a passion for helping you make the most out of your Expat Explore tour.

Will I get confirmation of my payment?

As soon as your payment has been processed by our accounts team, we will send you a confirmation email. Please note this may take up to 5 working days, depending on your method of payment.

An unforgettable adventure
So a lot of people have been asking me about my recent trip to Egypt with ExpatExplore, and whether it was safe travelling to Egypt in spite of the Embassy’s advice. Here's the reality and review of this itinerary (10 days- Best of Egypt):
Egypt is incredibly safe. I did not, at any moment, even think there was a reason to be unsafe. We traveled throughout th...Read More

e country (excluding Sinai Peninsula) and did not encounter any dangers. So please do relax everyone, you're good to go and make some memories!
Secondly, on the weather question, yes - we did travel in August summer in Egypt and no, we did not die. It is hot without any doubt, but Egypt was (for the most) non-humid and has a wonderful cool breeze so it is VERY manageable (it is unlike the summers in the Middle East where it is humid as well!). I would strongly recommend taking LONG clothes to cover up though (in spite of what you’re thinking) as you burn quite easily in the harsh sun. And so, take the right material of shirts and long pants that will keep the UV sun out but the cool breeze in! There is a reason their cultural wear is long robes (it all makes sense now :) ). I really must emphasize on this point as I really did burn having dressed incorrectly after Day 1.
As for the actual trip, I had the most fun ever. Egypt has long been a dream of mine to visit, and never did I think it would be this incredible, and surpassed any expectations I had. Traveling in this off-peak time has its perks too – there were hardly any tourists around which meant no queues for us at any temples, and no photobombs in any of our selfies.  This could also be because Egypt tourism has taken a major hit (as a result of inaccurate mass media broadcasts about the unsafety in Engypt), but this is a major incentive for us as tourists (although v sad for the locals who are struggling as a result of this recessionary movement).
The country offers wonderful food, smiles and attractions (Islamic, Historical as well as Coptic Christian!). There are problems of course, like every country in the world, but if you are able to withstand the hasslers, I think you’ll be fine! Keep sun-safe (above), small cash on you at all times for tips and get a local sim at the airport upon arrival (70EL) and you will be sorted (Wi-Fi is NOT available at almost all the hotels in Egypt so a local sim is an ABSOLUTE must)! Everything else is handled by your guide and they did advise us excellently throughout the tour on how to save money etc. 
My guide from Timeless Egypt (the touring company used by Expat), Michael Mousa, was a stand-up fella. He was knowledgeable about Egypt, and was friendly throughout our 10 days. I suppose he could have been more enthusiastic about the sites we sometimes visited, but bearing in mind that he has been doing this for 14 years straight, I think it is more than forgivable!  He was passionate about us having a safe, fun trip and I would like to thank him for his efforts.
If there were any rooms for improvement for him/ ExpatExplore, it would be to show/ take pictures of us at strategic vantage points at the various sites as the guides would know the best angles and poses as they have seen countless of tourists try them out! I did feel like we often didn’t know what classic photos we should have done till after we left and saw others’ photos, which was a real shame. But otherwise, a really well-organised and great job done on everything!
We were a small group of only 4 people that booked the tour at this time of the year, and so we were given a personalized experience of the country. We saw everything from Cairo to Aswan, Luxor and Hugardha. Apparently tour guides are not allowed in most of the sites, so that is a shame as you don’t always receive the most amount of detail from a distance, but as this is the law of the land, nothing can be done about it. I would suggest reading up history of the main attractions in Egypt as well as learning the hieroghylics so as to maximize on your temple time and understanding. Otherwise, it may feel like the blind leading the blind and all temples start looking the same (Yikes!).
I would also highly recommend the two day stay in Hugardha (one day is truly insufficient!) and also recommend staying on for the extra trip at the end to tour Alexandria which was well worth the day visit (so book your flights accordingly). I also added an additional day at the end to explore Cairo on foot and walking around the city center, meeting locals and trying their food and custom. I would highly recommend this solo day to get lost in Cairo, as it is the only way to truly explore any city! So add two days on after the tour ends! Don’t worry there is a cheap backpackers you can stay at in downtown Cairo for these nights  Also, for diving avid fans, do some research to go to Dahab (better than the Great Barrier Reef I have heard!)
There are optional tours which are offered by the company – I would recommend all if you can afford them (except maybe the Desert Safari option from Hagardha which felt like a badly planned rage of activities which were, substance over form, a pure tourist trap). The others though were all simply fabulous and should be considered as part of the tour! Don’t even hesitate in doing them if you can spare the extra change! Their details are all listed on the Expat website.
I have read other reviews online which detail the shock of the additional costs of the tour which are these optional tours and the entrance fees to sites. However, the company explicitly makes detail of these before booking so it is not difficult to sum the total cost you can expect. Also, this is a standard for all tour companies in Egypt, thereby giving you the option of which sites you simply don’t want to see without having to have to pay for them if this were a blanket deal. Our guide asked us in the beginning and we each paid based on what we wanted, so it wasn’t a case of coughing up cash each place we stopped at. I would advise the same to make the process a lot smoother and comfortable.
I would also advise looking into these and plan these optionals accordingly before booking – so that you are not surprised and have the right budget in mind. In addition, the company advises of the tips to be paid in Egypt which is truly a custom that cannot be forsaken and so budget for these additional pays as well. See their site for the details of these.
Although doing your research on other similar tour groups is recommended, I can already tell you from my thorough research,, Expat was the most competitively priced for what they offered. In order to facilitate comparisons, bear in mind that Expat flies to the distant sites (not via trains, or overnight buses) and that the Expat price includes more tour sites and more tour days. When you factor these in, I think you will also be happy with the deal on offer especially compared to deals on Contiki etc. Also, the accommodation used was also perfect which may not be the case with other companies (please check), though the location of our Cairo Hotel (Oasis Hotel) is located on the outskirts of the city. That being said, Ubers are available and are very cheap in Egypt so I managed around this.
Overall, I am thrilled to have used this company for the first time in such a diverse country. I have no regrets and would recommend them to you without hesitation. Thanks so much for making this a trip I will never forget, and meeting a group that will be friends for life!
Keep it up all, and cannot wait to use you again in another country!
-AdnanRead Less

Great cheap way to see the highlights of Egypt
My partner and I really loved our 10-day Egypt tour. We did add on all the upgrades - flights instead of the long couch trip & Nile Cruise instead of the felucca - which I would recommend. I think most importantly we felt very safe. Our trip was just after Christmas, 26th Dec - 4th January, and the best bet is to probably do a shorter tour over this time as we had 2x quiet ...Read More

days at our resort as it was a little too cold to swim etc, and we ended up sitting around not doing much. But overall it was really great. Peter our guide was awesome, at each attraction he would do a summary/share history and then give us enough time to walk around and take photos. I also really enjoyed the smaller group - there was 11 of us which was a nice size and not too many people.Read Less
