Summer in Europe is characterized by comfortable temperatures, long days and blue skies. The whole continent awakens after winter and is abuzz with outdoor activities and a new sense of excitement. It’s the perfect time to discover and explore a new city. 

If you need a little help or inspiration on which European city will fit best with your vacation preferences, we’ve made a list of the best summertime cities. All of the places we’ve included can be visited independently, or on a tour of Europe.

1. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the kind of city that attracts every type of tourist: from romantic vacation goers to backpackers, to families. This vibrant Spanish city is filled with incredible attractions that make sightseeing a truly captivating spectacle.

3. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is the country’s capital city and cultural hub. You’ll find more than enough attractions to keep you busy during your vacation. Check out the magnificent Buda Castle and the stately Hungarian Parliament Building. Take a peaceful walk or boat ride along the Danube River. 

If you’re after a relaxing vacation, Budapest’s spas and thermal baths will not disappoint. The summer months also see plenty of concerts and festivals hosted in the city. 

Taking a dip in one of Budapest’s thermal pools is a great way to spend a summer day in the city! Szechenyi Thermal Bath is one of Budapest’s most popular and recognized bathhouses thanks to its bright yellow walls.

4. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is one of the best places to plan a Mediterranean summer vacation. Located on the Adriatic Sea, countless beaches surround the city. From secluded swim spots to beachfront bars and restaurants, visitors can wind down and relax in the refreshing, crystal-clear waters. 

Dubrovnik’s distinctive Old Town is surrounded by ancient walls. It contains many well-preserved buildings and structures, including churches, monuments, and squares. Every corner you turn reveals a new appeal and is worthy of a picture.

5. Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you’re a fan of music festivals, Amsterdam is one of the best cities in Europe to visit in summer. The annual Kwaku Festival takes place over four weekends in July and August. With an upbeat vibe, live music, and plenty of food and drink stalls, what’s not to love?  

Amsterdam is truly charming in the summer! Explore the city by bike, on foot or cruise along the iconic canal.

6. London, England

London is one of the best summer destinations in Europe. In winter, the days are short. However, in summer, the sun doesn’t begin to set until around 9:00pm. This makes summertime trips the best time for sightseeing. 

It goes without saying that London has a very long list of attractions. Whether you’re interested in discovering the city’s intriguing history or taking in its modern sights and delights, summer is the best time to do so. 

Take advantage of the city’s pedestrian-friendly layout and spend full days exploring on foot. You’ll be surrounded by warm temperatures and plenty of daylight.

7. Prague, Czech Republic

If you’re a fan of historic buildings, picturesque architecture, and cheap beer, Prague is a must-see destination. Its fairytale charm and picture-postcard aesthetic make it one of Europe’s most stunning cities. 

Prague has it all – culture, history, ancient sites, and incredible scenery. Not to mention, it’s one of Europe’s more affordable holiday destinations. It’s also a very walkable city. You could spend the whole day exploring Prague on foot, without any need for public transportation. 

The Old Town contains many top attractions, including Prague Castle, the Astronomical Tower, and St. Vitus Cathedral. After a busy day spent sightseeing, experiencing the city’s nightlife is another must. 

From dance clubs and lively pubs to jazz lounges and wine bars, Prague has a little bit of everything.
