DAY 5: Puno - Sacred Valley

Travel to Peru’s Sacred Valley today! Enjoy the views of the Peruvian countryside along the way. First stop of the day is Pucará. Explore the ancient Incan ruins - there is something noticeably spiritual about the many Inca sites! Pass through La Raya, sitting at 4300 metres above sea level, and enjoy the panoramic views. Do some shopping with locals at roadside markets. Next, visit Raqchi which was an Inca fortress in the past. The last stop is Urubamba. Here, see the “Sistine Chapel of Latin America”. Arrive in the heart of El Valle Sagrado (Sacred Valley) and check into the hotel this evening. Enjoy an included dinner with the group tonight.

Experiences

Visit Pucará: This small but exquisite architectural sight is of substantial significance for the Inca! Pucará, as it’s also known, is known for its pottery, the Pucará Stone Museum with its selection of original and replicated ceramics, sculptures and other objects from pre-Inca culture.

Visit Raqchi: Raqchi is home to one of the biggest archaeological sites in the area. The ruins of Raqchi are mostly known as the Temple of Wiracocha which was built in honour of Wiracocha, a deity believed to be the giver of all life. Outside of the temple, there are also living quarters, ceremonial baths and a natural lake fed by spring water through stone fountains.

Explore the Church of Andahuaylillas: Taking our eyes off the Inca ruins for a moment, visit the Andean village of Andahuaylillas and its Baroque church. Named the “Sistine Chapel of Latin America”, or “The Sistine Chapel of the Andes”, this church was built according to Spanish traditions and dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle. Expect painted ceilings, a gold-leaf altar and a shimmering, colourful display of murals.

This is the ideal spot to get a behind-the-scenes look at the art of Peruvian weaving and perhaps buy your own woven blanket or scarf. The locals you meet here might be descendants of the Incas, the sophisticated Andean tribe of South America. The local language is called Quechua which is mainly spoken here in the Andes mountains of Peru.

Guided tour of Ollantaytambo Archaeological Complex: Ollantaytambo is one of the most important towns in the Sacred Valley and the last major town before Machu Picchu. Built on the site of ancient ruins, its impressive terraces were the base for Incan ceremonies and the royal estate of the Incan Emperor. Sacred Peru - Highly Recommend!
Our Sacred Peru tour was incredible. I was surprised by how much I loved each aspect of the trip. I assumed Machu Picchu would be the major highlight, but there were so many other experiences that were just as incredible. We loved our trip to the Uros Islands on Lake Titikaka, exploring various Incan ruins in the Sacred Valley, and wandering the streets of Arequipa and Cusco. Our tour guide, Fernando, is Peruvian and was a wonderful source of knowledge. His patience and attention to the needs of the group ensured we all had the best time.

Peru adventures
Machu Picchu is now off my bucket list. It was a great adventure. It took a while to acclimate to the altitudes but am glad the tour started in Ariquipa and we worked our way to Machu Picchu so by the time I arrived I was able to climb without any issues. There was a lot of time on the bus but we stopped at many places to break it up. Great trip!!!

Fantastic trip!
Had a great time on this tour. Zema was a super tour guide and his trainees (Fernando and Rafael) were extremely good as well. Highly recommend this tour as there are so many wonderful things to see and so much history there!

Once in a lifetime experience
My husband and I are both grateful for Xema's handling of a big group on this tour. It was a challenging one and stressful to handle all the bookings, from our flights to Arequipa and back to Lima, plus the local transport (buses and trains). It was such an amazing experience Peru with the careful planning of ExpatExplore and the tour director. Another experience, different from all the other tours we joined as we used only 1 bus everyday for the tour. A different set up, I should say. Adapt, adjust and just be glad that we are all safe.

5th tour and it's truly an adventure
I just trust that everything is taken care off to let us just experience and understand something of the culture. Even the altitude difficulties didn't deter the group pulling together for each other.
